The Goldblatt’s store in the Green Meadows Shopping Center, Addison, which opened in 1962 (seen here in 1976). Joe Archie.

Goldblatt’s pioneered some of the innovative merchandising and sales approaches that would later be taken up by the national discount chains. Its bargain prices earned it loyal customers, as did its convenient locations and responsiveness to local consumer needs. Shoppers fondly recall Goldblatt’s noisy basement pet departments and the enticing smell of food from the deli and snack departments. Customer Shirley Walker said, “I remember walking down Ashland Avenue and visiting the 47th and Ashland Goldblatt’s store. My mom used to purchase her canaries there. I remember getting 6 finches there for around $2 each.”114

Shoppers reminisce about Goldblatt’s much-loved sidewalk sales, the big metal root beer dispensers, the store’s delicious boiled ham and its trademark cheesecake. More than anything, they remember a store that promised outstanding bargains—and you didn’t have to travel far to get them.
